Responsibilities

 

Job Summary:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist III Lead oversees daily operations within specific laboratory sections, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and providing technical and consultative services to the medical staff. This role demands a high degree of technical expertise in multiple laboratory disciplines and effective management skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Section Supervision and Technical Oversight:
    • Supervise daily section operations, ensuring efficient workflow and accurate test results.
    • Function as the Section Technical Supervisor/Lead, adhering to responsibilities outlined under 42 CFR 493.1451 and 493.1449.
    • Perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures using both manual and automated methods across disciplines including Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and others.
  • Quality and Compliance Management:
    • Oversee the section’s quality management/assurance programs.
    • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements.
    • Review quality control performance and document corrective actions for any deviations from established performance specifications.
  • Consultative and Developmental Functions:
    • Provide consultative services as a Technical Consultant to the medical staff.
    • Develop, maintain, and update policy and procedure manuals for the section.
    • Participate in hospital-wide interdisciplinary performance improvement initiatives.
  • Operational and Personnel Management:
    • Manage technical and fiscal operations within the section.
    • Assess staff competency, conduct performance evaluations timely, and ensure appropriate training.
    • Ensure maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, documenting all routine and as-needed maintenance.
  • Testing and Safety Protocols:
    • Ensure accurate patient testing results before release or reporting, recognizing age-specific differences from newborns to geriatrics.
    • Handle proficiency testing samples according to the same protocols as patient samples to maintain integrity and compliance.
    • Adhere to all departmental and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • May include oversight of Point-of-Care Testing (POCT).
    • Additional tasks as assigned by the department manager or director.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
 
1. ASCP certification, or equivalent, required 
2. Minimum five years of hospital laboratory work experience required
3. Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements as stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489) 
4. Current and Valid State License if the laboratory is located in a state where required.
