Assists the Pharmacist, under his or her supervision, in the daily operation of the Pharmacy.
● For inpatient areas, the Senior Pharmacy Technician may be trained in intravenous and/or hazardous drug compounding, is regularly staffed as an IV admixture or chemotherapy admixture pharmacy technician or in advanced operational areas (e.g. controlled substance distribution, ADC replenishment), and also regularly assists Pharmacy Leadership with quality assurance projects, controlled substance monitoring and auditing, and regulatory compliance monitoring and auditing. Serves as a designated trainer for new pharmacy technicians.
● For retail areas, the Senior Pharmacy Technician provides expert-level support to pharmacists, performing specialized tasks that require advanced certification. In addition to QA, auditing, and training oversight, the Senior Pharmacy Technician manages higher-level responsibilities, including advanced technical procedures and ensuring workflow efficiency within the pharmacy.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
2. State Pharmacy Technician License/Registration required.
3. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential required (this requirement may be waived for current pharmacy students enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy).
4. At least 4 years of pharmacy technician experience in the current practice area (inpatient or retail) preferred.
5. Additional certifications in relevant areas of practice through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred (i.e., CSPT, Nonsterile Compounding, Supply Chain, Immunizations, and Inventory Management, etc.)
6. Graduate of ASHP-accredited or equivalent pharmacy technician training program preferred.
7. 340B program experience preferred (if at a 340B facility)
