Overview

We are seeking a Hospital Financial Counselor, also referred to as a Patient Access Financial Counselor or Healthcare Financial Advisor, in our Patient Accounting department. Our Hospital Financial Counselor assists patients in understanding and managing the financial aspects of their healthcare by verifying insurance, estimating costs, and guiding them through payment options or financial assistance programs. They also collaborate with internal departments to ensure accurate billing and support the resolution of account or insurance issues.

Employment Type: Full Time

Hours: 8-hour shift – 8:30am to 5:00pm

Location: Dallas Regional Medical Center – Mesquite, TX

Responsibilities

** The Hospital Financial Counselor is responsible for determining patient financial responsibility through insurance verification, communicating costs prior to services, securing accurate patient information, arranging payment or financial assistance when needed, and coordinating with Case Management to ensure coverage and authorizations for care.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but not limited to):

  • Patient Financials: Meet with patients before or after services to review insurance coverage, estimate out-of-pocket costs, and explain financial obligations
  • Insurance Verification and Authorization: Verify insurance benefits, obtain prior authorizations, and confirm eligibility to ensure timely reimbursement and reduce claim denials
  • Assistance with Financial Aid Programs: Help patients apply for financial assistance, charity care, Medicaid, or payment plans based on financial need and hospital policy
  • Education and Counseling: Educate patients and families about billing procedures, insurance processes, and available financial resources in a clear and compassionate manner
  • Billing and Collections Support: Collaborate with billing teams to resolve account issues, explain bills to patients, and follow up on outstanding balances or denied claims
  • Coordination with Internal Departments: Work closely with admissions, registration, case management, and clinical departments to ensure accurate and complete financial information

Qualifications

 

Before we go any further, we do have some deal-breakers. You must have: 

Knowledge of standard insurance companies and verification requirements.

Well versed in authorization processes for all payers.

Ability to multi-task, prioritize needs to meet required timelines.

Analytical and problem-solving skills.

Customer Services experience required.

High School Graduate or GED Equivalent Required (effective 4/1/14 for all new hires).
