The Cytology Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the cytology laboratory, ensuring the accurate, timely, and compliant evaluation of cytologic specimens. This role provides leadership and technical oversight for cytology services, including gynecologic and non-gynecologic testing, as well as fine needle aspiration (FNA) support. The Cytology Supervisor is responsible for staff supervision, competency assessment, and performance evaluations, while maintaining adherence to CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards. The position collaborates closely with pathologists, laboratory leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to support high-quality diagnostic services, continuous quality improvement, and optimal patient care outcomes.
This individual: 1) Supervise daily cytology laboratory operations, including gynecologic (Pap tests) and non-gynecologic specimen processing and evaluation 2) Coordinate staffing schedules, assignments, and workflow to ensure efficiency and adequate coverage 3) Perform and oversee microscopic evaluation of cytology specimens and ensure diagnostic accuracy 4) Assist and support pathologists during fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures, including adequacy assessments when applicable 5) Ensure timely and accurate reporting of cytology results in the laboratory information system 6) Monitor productivity and turnaround times in accordance with regulatory standards 7) Conduct staff competency assessments (initial, semiannual, and annual) in compliance with CLIA and CAP requirements 8) Perform staff performance evaluations, provide coaching, and implement corrective actions when necessary 9) Lead staff training, onboarding, and continuing education programs 10) Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, TJC, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation standards 11) Maintain cytology quality assurance programs, including cytology-histology correlation, rescreening, and discrepancy review 12) Oversee proficiency testing and ensure appropriate documentation and follow-up actions 13) Develop, review, and update cytology policies, procedures, and standard operating protocols 14) Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of cytology equipment and instrumentation 15) Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in compliance with infection control and safety standards 16) Collaborate with pathologists, clinicians, and laboratory leadership to support patient care and service improvements 17) Monitor workload distribution and prioritize cases based on clinical urgency 18) Support documentation, coding, and billing processes related to cytology services 19) Participate in validation and implementation of new technologies, methods, and test systems 20) Prepare for and lead regulatory inspections and audits; address deficiencies with corrective action plans 21) Manage inventory, including ordering and maintaining adequate supplies and reagents 22) Participate in departmental budgeting, productivity monitoring, and cost management initiatives 23) Serve as a technical resource and escalate complex cases or issues as needed 24) May act as department lead in the absence of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Pathologist 25) Perform additional duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
1. ASCP Cytotechnologist certification, or equivalent or Completion of a cytotechnology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), required as stated in CLIA (42 CFR § 493.1483).
2. Minimum of three year full-time experience as a cytotechnologist within the preceding ten years, required as stated in (42 CFR § 493.1469).

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $92,601.60 to $124,633.60 on an annualized basis. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
