The Cytotechnologist performs specialized microscopic evaluation of cytologic specimens to identify cellular abnormalities and assist in the diagnosis of benign and malignant conditions. This role is responsible for the preparation, screening, and interpretation of cytology samples from various body sites, including gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, as well as fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures. Working closely with pathologists and laboratory leadership, the Cytotechnologist ensures accurate, timely, and high-quality results while maintaining compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. The position also contributes to quality improvement initiatives, documentation, and laboratory operations to support optimal patient care.
This individual: 1) Screen and evaluate gynecologic (Pap tests) and non-gynecologic cytology specimens for abnormalities 2) Perform microscopic examination and identify cellular changes consistent with benign, pre-malignant, and malignant conditions 3) Prepare and stain cytologic specimens using appropriate laboratory techniques 4) Assist pathologists during fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures, including specimen adequacy assessment when applicable 5) Ensure accurate documentation and reporting of findings in the laboratory information system 6) Maintain productivity and turnaround time standards for cytology case review 7) Correlate cytology findings with clinical history and previous pathology results when available 8) Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs, including cytology-histology correlation and rescreening requirements 9) Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards for cytology practice 10) Maintain equipment, reagents, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized manner 11) Troubleshoot technical or specimen-related issues and escalate as needed 12) Participate in proficiency testing and continuing education to maintain competency 13) Assist with workload distribution and prioritization of cases 14) Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care 15) Support documentation and billing processes as required 16) Participate in special projects and departmental initiatives 17) Perform additional duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Pathologist.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
1. ASCP Cytotechnologist certification, or equivalent or Completion of a cytotechnology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), required as stated in CLIA (42 CFR § 493.1483).
2. Minimum of one year hospital-based laboratory experience preferred.

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $42.00 to $56.53.
