Overview

Responsible for the evaluation, treatment planning and implementation of treatment for patients demonstrating disorders of speech, language, cognition, swallowing and other services prescribed by a physician. Assists in developing and implementing new and ongoing programs beneficial for the enhancement of the department. 

Responsibilities

Performs evaluations by conducting tests and measurements of muscles, nerves, joints, etc. in regards to speech, language, cognition, oral motor control and swallowing.
Determines problems and formulates realistic and appropriate short and long term goals.
Develops treatment plans based on evaluation results including frequency and duration of treatment.
Assists in radiology with video fluoroscopy.
Delivers care efficiently without sacrificing quality.
Meets productivity standards of the department.
Consistently prepares a complete written evaluation for the patient’s medical record after the initial evaluation.
Completes daily progress notes in a timely manner.
Keeps accurate, up-to-date records and completes discharge summaries, weekly summaries, care plans, etc. on a timely basis.
Uses appropriate abbreviations and legible print.
Arranges for home equipment prior to discharge if applicable.
Provides patients with a home program as necessary.
Reports any changes in the patient’s condition or behavior to appropriate nursing or rehab team personnel.
Consistently ensures that all charges are recorded promptly before going home in the p.m. without reminders.
Schedules patient in an efficient manner.
Assists in the orientation and skill development of new staff members as required.
Presents inservices to the staff after attending outside courses as necessary.
Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling, trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to 1) Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, 2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation 3) Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

1.    Graduate of an accredited college or university with Bachelor’s in speech therapy required.

2.    MS degree in Speech-Language Pathology preferred.

3.    At least one year of experience in a hospital setting.

4.    Licensed by the State in Speech-Language Pathology.

5.    Current BLS for healthcare provider’s certification upon hire and maintain current.
