Responsibilities

The Radiology Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process. The Radiology Registered Nurse provides direct patient care within the scope of practice. The Radiology Nurse works collaboratively within a multi-disciplinarily team and is responsible for providing the highest quality nursing care and service excellence in the continuum of care. The Radiology Registered Nurse works in support of the Radiologist, providing assistance in the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Assists with the maintenance of equipment and inventory. Assesses procedure room or equipment functioning and readiness. Responsible for adherence to regulations, standards and hospital or unit policies and procedures and participation in Performance Improvement activities, department meetings and in-services. Acts as a resource for other personnel as appropriate.

  • Promotes and demonstrates vision, mission and values of the organization.
  • Assists Radiologist in performance of highly specialized vascular and interventional procedures.
  • Coordinates all interventional Patients in the Radiology Department by interfacing with other departments such as Admitting, Outpatient Surgery, Anesthesia, Surgery and Nursing.
  • Assist in scheduling of Interventional Radiology exams and/or other exams as needed for both Inpatient and Outpatient.
  • Consults with the Radiologist or ordering physician when necessary for purposes of clarification.
  • Properly assembles supplies and equipment prior to procedures.
  • Does not attempt to perform an exam which cannot be performed safely and/or properly.
  • Obtains an accurate history from each patient consistently and conveys this information to the Radiologist.
  • Assesses patient condition upon arrival. Recommends interventions if needed.
  • Obtains an accurate history from each patient consistently and conveys this information to the Radiologist.
  • Modifies patient protocols relative to the patient’s physical and cognitive abilities. Discusses these issues with the Radiologist.
  • Ascertains lab values and has them available prior to the start of any procedure; Assures all pre-procedure documentation is available; re-verifies written consent with scheduled procedure.
  • Anticipates any negative outcomes and proactively prepares for them.
  • Actively communicates with patient and family explaining the procedure to them.
  • Monitors vital signs regularly and documents results properly.
  • Administers and documents use of medications accurately. Detects and reports medication errors and ADR’s according to hospital policy. Safely and accurately administers medications and documents properly in a timely manner.
  • Initiates, titrates and safely monitors all IV medications and blood components. Uses two patient identifiers consistently when drawing lab, medicating, or performing any procedure on a patient and blood components Skillfully starts and discontinues IVs following the hospital venipuncture policy.
  • Reports any unusual finding (patient related, technical) to department director/House Supervisor.
  • Assists the Radiologist utilizing strict sterile technique.
  • Evaluates patient responses to nursing care, and documents observations.
  • Accurately charts all interventions in the computer and/or manually during “downtime”.
  • Constantly monitors Scanner performance and image quality.
  • Maintains control of medications and their associated documentation with the Department.
  • Adequately labels all films before they are turned in to the Radiologist. (PACS)
  • Completes all necessary paperwork (i.e. log book, worksheets) in a timely manner.
  • Monitors patient during transport and gives thorough, detailed report to the receiving unit to ensure consistency in the plan of care. Uses the SBAR communication methodology in all reporting.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

 

1. Current and valid state RN License.
2. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
3. Current ACLS Certification 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
4. Certified Radiology Nurse (CRN) preferred.
5. One (1) year of acute clinical Radiology Nursing experience preferred.
6. Ventilator Management experience preferred.
7. Conscious Sedation Monitoring competency within 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
8. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
