Responsibilities

  • Uses two patient identifiers when re-banding a patient or posting lab results on a chart to ensure correct information. Demonstrates awareness of importance of accurate patient identification at all times.
  • Does not use unacceptable abbreviations; alerts physicians and staff when transcribing orders.
  • Notifies the Bio-Med department for nonfunctioning equipment in a timely manner.
  • Orders supplies in cost effective manner as needed and assists with restocking. Keeps accurate inventory of unit supplies.
  • Checks for completeness and accuracy of patient record and correct order of documents within the record.
  • Maintains completeness of the patient chart for admission, transfer and discharge, medication reconciliation form as needed.
  • Monitors patient charts to insure hospital and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Maintains admission, discharge and transfer log book and Nursing Administation Department staff daily patient assignments.
  • Practices telephone etiquette when placing and answering calls for physicians, patient/families and other departments and communicates messages timely to the appropriate person/department.
  • Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principle of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit facility.
  • Ensures crash cart is immediately restocked with the appropriate items after each code; Notifies Charge RN of any issue with timely restocking by appropriate personnel.
  • Notifies nursing personnel in a timely manner for call lights, clinical alarms, telephone calls, or as needed.
  • Ensures consistently that all clinical alarms, i.e. Cardiac monitors, are set with the appropriate parameters for the patients and are audible at all times, as appropriate.
  • Prepares SBAR communication tool for change of shift report.
  • Assists with all admission, discharges, transfers and physician orders, as needed.
  • Utilizes the National Patient Safety Goals in the work place as related to job performance. Demonstrates awareness of a safe environment for staff, patients, visitors, or any other persons on the unit.
  • Participates in data collection for PI specific to the unit.
  • Consistently performs special projects and assignments in an accurate, efficient and thorough manner.
  • Assists discharge planner with faxing and acquiring authorization for release of information as needed.
  • Completes additional duties as assigned by the staff; seeks clarification from Charge Nurse when necessary.
  • Performs other essential duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

 

Education and Work Experience

  1. High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  2. Three to five year?s secretarial experience preferred.
  3. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills.
