The LPN Student Nurse Apprentice – Basic is an adjunct to the patient care team who works under the licensed nurse preceptor who remains physically present and readily accessible to designate, prescribe a course of action or give procedural guidance, direction, and periodic evaluation. Direct supervision by the licensed nurse preceptor is required for all invasive procedures. Permitted procedures must not exceed those defined as permitted by the Alabama Board of Nursing as “basic” competencies for the LPN Student Nurse Apprentice. Skills must first be verified by the program of nursing before the skill can be verified by the licensed nurse preceptor in the clinical setting. The licensed nurse preceptor may suspend or withdraw delegation to the LPN Student Nurse Apprentice at any time. The LPN Student Nurse Apprentice is responsible for documentation of all skills performed, but the licensed nurse preceptor is responsible to verify and sign documentation as required. The LPN Nurse Apprentice may not take verbal or phone orders without the presence of the licensed nurse preceptor.

The Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Provides direct patient care within the scope of practice. The Registered Nurse also directs and guides patient/family teaching and activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing care in Telemetry. The Registered Nurse is directly responsible and accountable for the care given to his/her patients in the Emergency Department. He / She communicates with the physician about the changes in the patients clinical condition including results of the diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is capable of responding quickly and accurately to changes in the condition and/or response to treatment.
